Lappula occidentalis (S. Watson) Greene var. occidentalis is native to Alberta. Lappula squarrosa (Retz.) Dumort. is an introduced European. L. echinata is a synonym which could refer to either species: L. echinata Gilib. var. occidentalis (S. Watson) B. Boivin for the native, and L. echinata Gilib. for the introduced. The descriptions in Moss, Ed. 2 suggest that the introduced species is the more common of the two. The nutlets of L. squarrosa have slender marginal prickles, in two rows on each margin, not confluent at the base. The prickles of L. occidentalis are flattened, in one row on each margin, and often widen and run together at the base. Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development list "Bluebur - Lappula echinata" as a nuisance weed. Both species grow in dense patches mostly on disturbed soil, and could be easy to mistake for one another. Either could be confused with similar native Hackelia species.
